Sweden / Russian Federation 2002, 109 minutes
Dir. Lukas Moodysson
In Russian with English subtitles
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama / Youth
Aroview: Lauded Swedish film-maker Lukas Moodyson turns his talents to the plight of a Russian teenage girl whose hopes for a brighter future (and American dream) are compromised by poverty, social decay and the abandonment of her mother.
Sustained by the magnetic central presence of newcomer Oksana Akinshina as Lilya, she takes comfort in a touching fraternal friendship, but falls into prostitution and becomes a victim of her own naivety. Again proving himself an adept and persuasive storyteller, the director weaves tragic notes this time into his deeply empathetic portrait, leaving a powerful and sobering aftertaste.

4 stars (Very Good) A difficult film to watch due to the subject but a brilliant film all the same and a must see. Unforgettable young actors. ~Anon
