USA 2003, 135 minutes
Dir. Ron Howard
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama, Suspense/Crime / Western

Topics: Period - 1800s.

Aroview: A brooding historical thriller set in 19th-century New Mexico in which Blanchett reunites with her estranged father (Jones) to search for her daughter who has been kidnapped by Apaches.

As gratifyingly intelligent as Clint Eastwood's revisionist Westerns, this disregards with the usual generic cliches, delivering a palable frontier realism in which menace and amorality constantly threaten. Dir. Howard doesn't skimp on delivering the required action either; this has the same brutal urgency as his earlier RANSOM (which, interestingly, has a similiar premise) despite suffering from excessive duration.
