Girl with a Pearl Earring
Aroview: A superior dramatic conceit that speculates on the background to Johannes Vermeer's enigmatic 17th century portrait of the title.
Johannson plays a maid, newly inducted into the stifling Vermeer household, who becomes privy to the painter's (Firth) innermost artistic ambitions and the subject of several works. Developed by its dir. (better known as a documentary filmmaker) with an eye for quiet domestic detail and the subtle dramas of Dutch family and society, this succeeds in evoking the mystery of creation and genius with a certain air of romance and lack of melodrama. Adapted from the novel by Tracy Chevalier.
