Assault on Precinct 13
Aroview: Effective update of John Carpenter's 1970s classic in which high-impact action and a fairly convincing raw tenseness carry the wellworn tale of a police-station under siege from murderously corrupt cops, who want to eliminate a too-knowledgable witness.
Hawke plays a shifty police officer who is subsequently forced to recruit a team of defenders from the rag-tag bunch trapped with him, which includes administration staff, petty crims and the kingpin witness himself (Fishburne). Although lumbered with weighty backstories and lacking the mordant humour of Carpenter's original, the driving violence and dedication to the approach taken distinguish it from recent Hollywood efforts.
