Machinist, The
Aroview: A mind-twisting thriller in the industrial-gothic mould, this might at times feel like an off-cut from the David Lynch-Cronenberg-Fincher production line, but it holds its own enough to still be a must-see for fans of the genre.
Christian Bale goes all out to portrayal a squeamishly skeletal blue-collar worker who finds himself immersed on a Kafka-esque treadmill of isolation, hallucination, and industrial accidents. Fitted with a strong overall premise, this works to a satisfying twist even if it refuses to unravel its enigma until it chalks up a feature-length running time.

4 stars (Very Good) Not quite as satisfying as a first-time viewing of Fight Club, but with plenty to like for fans of the genre, this is possibly most remarkable for the extreme lengths Bale went to in starving himself for the skeletal role. ~Tom H
