A story of impressive personal courage that is well worth telling. The casting is impressive, there are some beautiful shooting locations, and the makeup department does a great job.
The scenes between the house boy Protee & young France are beautifully done. Although the screenplay has some untidiness once the number of characters increases its depiction of a racist society toward the end of colonialism is telling in a low key way.
The plot idea is not fresh but the writing is just good enough to survive the running time. Gosling ensures his segment is the strongest and Mendelsohn and Liotta are hard to ignore.
