Come and See (1985)
Paths of Glory (1957): The reality of the story is so sad and disheartening, and Kubrick proves it by the end.
Upstream Color (2013): I don't get it (obviously) but it feels so vital and poetically cryptic that it becomes a really moving experience. From the ace directing to the brilliant score, Carruth is some sort of genius.; DVD $29.95
Whiplash (2014): Although the editing was sharp, the overdubbed drums that didn't quite sync up with the acting meant I was never drawn into the drama – or the action (disclaimer: I'm a drummer!). Minor details but when you're so up–close–and–personal, the details matt
Boxer, The (1998): That chemistry! Hard (impossible?) to find any faults with DDL and Watson is great too. A powerful film that doesn't quite sustain its grip, but is a solid watch nonetheless.
Interstellar (2014): Painfully over–explained and over–acted and over–directed(?). But it was always going to be over the top and the visuals are pretty fun.
Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka) (1988): Caught me completely off guard. Never has a movie made me grieve before. Beautifully patient and powerful, with carefully crafted images and characters.; Blu-Ray $39.95
Ten Canoes (2006): With Thomsons' photos as a reference, the cinematography is hypnotic and balanced, while the story and setting wrap you up.; Blu-Ray $19.95
