Steamboy
Aroview: A rapturous adventure set in quasi-futuristic Victorian England, where a young lad is given a "steamball" to take care of and becomes slowly aware of a power-wrestle between his father, grandfather and various rival factions to control this secret technology.
With a dense backdrop of industrial squalor, this takes its fairytale tone from Charles Dickens, progressing to apocalyptic battles across the London cityscape when the 1851 Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace erupts into a display of war-technology. Dir. Otomo enters the territory of Miyazaki (CASTLE IN THE SKY), without quite the distinctive idealism and sympathy, though his noisy spectacle is certainly a tour de force.
Optional English audio-track features Anna Paquin, Alfred Molina and Patrick Stewart.
