8 1/2 Women

Aroview: The indefatiguable provocateur of English cinema makes a perverse 'tribute' to Federico Fellini's 1963 masterpiece 8 1/2, with this tale of a rich financier and his son, who populate their Swiss mansion with 8 1/2 variously disrobed concubines (one a double amputee).

Enumerating the links between sexual fantasy, social taboo, 'otherness', power, and painterly composition, this contains some startling scenes, though without either the visual layering or narrative simplicity of other works. Still, for its black humour and ability to shock, this will please the majority of Greenaway fans.
