Rating: [PG]
Genres: Family, Comedy
Aroview: Lavish with magnificent visual icing, this version of Roald Dahl's classic childrens' story is a pretty tasty updating of the story of young Charlie Bucket, who wins a tour of the fantastical sweet factory of the eccentric Willy Wonka (Depp) along with a band of variously sinful children.
With dir. Burton's stylings and instincts fitting the material like a glove, this gives as valid and imaginative take on the book as the 1971 version, though it remains largely superfluous for those of a previous generation. Depp's performance echoes the real-life androgynous remoteness of one Michael Jackson, providing a psychologically nervous and slightly menacing characterisation. Meanwhile, the Oompa-Loompas are friendlier than remembered, though the gruelling fates of those 'bad' children remain as entertaining demonstrations of practical morality as ever.

3 stars (Good Enough) Depp's Willy Wonka is no where as good as the previous, but all the other characters are improvements. Also, the lack of singing is an improvement. ~dr.strangelove
3 stars (Good Enough) Very different to the original film, this rendition of the Roald Dahl classic may be a turnoff for fans of the 70s classic, but Burton can still be commended for his creation of a quirky chocolate-factory, and for bringing Wonka to a whole new generation. ~Tom H
3 stars (Good Enough) While nothing like the original, Burton's unique style manages to create a very credible take on a classic story. Those loyal to the first version may be disappointed, but today's generation of children will relate well. ~GenXGirl
4 stars (Very Good) I didn't think Mr. Depp looked comfortable in this. However, the supporting cast included the great Helena Bonham Carter and David Kelly, and the children importantly were excellent. The artwork and set design were outstanding. ~Tubbs
