Tom's Midnight Garden

Aroview: A handsome screen version of children's novel by Phillipa Pearce, in which a young boy in the 1950s is sent to live with his aunt and uncle because of a bout of measles in the immediate family.

Although he dislikes his drab and draughty new home, he is excited to discover that after midnight it transforms into an elegant mansion, complete with a wondrous garden, complete with a playmate. Although the script is ho-hum, this secures its magic 'wonderland' atmosphere via some accomplished visual touches. Should provide pleasant viewing for a mixed adult-child audience.
