Live and Become
Aroview: Set against a little-known human catastrophe in which thousands of Ethiopian Jews (Falasha) were evacuated to Israel during civil unrest in the mid-1980s, this follows the aftermath of events for a secretly-Christian orphan who joins the exodus and is adopted by a liberal Israeli couple.
Depicted by three different actors - child, teenage, young adult - this makes some provocative points about how questions of identity and kinship evolve over time, as the young lad grows up fiercely conscious of his ambiguous status in a land of troubles. Although tending toward the episodic at times, this maintains its committment to the emotional arcs of its characters and as such, is consistently humanist and non-polemical.
