Masai - The Rain Warriors
Aroview: Simple and visually-sweeping, this African epic follows a group of teenage warriors from their drought-stricken village out into the harsh landscape in order to appease the 'Red God' and retrieve a mystical lions' mane - trouble is, nobody knows if the lion even exists.
Although suffering a little from an outsider 'anthropological' perspective, the story and characters are articulated with necessary sympathy and the quest becomes a resonant allegory by the film's end. Lush cinematography adds to the sense of dusty immediacy.
