Aroview: Robust action film with a political conscience, Leonardo DiCaprio gamely sustains a South African accent and an amoral toughness as a bullet-dodging mercenary diamond smuggler who becomes obsessed with finding the buried 'blood diamond'.
Caught up with an American liberal journalist (Connelly) looking to expose endemic industry corruption, and a benevolent African local who holds the key, the trio gel as a pack of flawed movie heroes, while their co-existence mirrors the wider dichotomy of this troubled continent.
While suffering the expected hallmarks of Hollywood over-statement, this finds a wider audience for some important issues while delivering the goods as a propulsive action-thriller.

3 stars (Good Enough) DiCaprio's performance may be good, but somehow he's never quite believable. The film is fairly solid all-round, and hard to criticise for that reason, but it just never quite feels genuine. This is still a Hollywood action adventure. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) DiCaprio and Hounsou ensure that this has enough heart and soul to lift it above the ordinary action film. ~Wizzums
