Aroview: Perennial mindbender Terry Gilliam burrows down the rabbit hole, perverting a child’s fairytale into a corrupted, deeply disturbed nightmare augmented by his usual visual and imaginative flair.
Viewed through the psychosis of a neglected young girl whose retreat into a netherworld is brought upon by abusive, junkie parents, Gilliam soon enough distorts any remnants of a childhood fantasy into something altogether ghastly, misanthropic, and very adult. Eschewing the dark sense of wonderment and escape of PAN’S LABYRINTH, this is certainly not for kids, and while frequently daring, ensnares the viewer in its own nauseating despair.
