USA 2007, 113 minutes
Dir. David Slade
Genres: Horror / Vampires
Feat. Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Danny Huston, Ben Foster, Nathaniel Lees, Elizabeth Hawthorne, Joel Tobeck
Aroview: Stylish vampire movie with a potentially great twist: it pits the citizens of an Arctic Circle town - plunged into darkness one month every year - against hordes of opportunistic undead.
Helmed by music director turned filmmaker David Slade (HARD CANDY), and therefore awash with high-end visuals and innovative set-pieces, the film gladly indulges the cult of splatter and zombie pictures, though as a trade off, lacks the human dimension to transcend the horror genre. The grizzly Danny Huston provides brief value as a bloodthirsty vampire leader, but like the rest of the cast, is ultimately a pedestrian (or victim) among the gory action. Based on a popular graphic novel, and shot entirely in New Zealand (with Auckland doubling for Alaska).

3 stars (Good Enough) Stylish, very bloody vampire flick filmed in NZ, this is heavy on the horror and suspense, with less attention paid to story or vampire lore. Not groundbreaking, but entertaining. ~Tom H
3 stars (Good Enough) In a time where vampire cinema is "infected" with sparkling vamps, its great to see true vampires doing their bloody thing. Stunning film to look at and some excellent effects. Not for the weak stomach though. ~Anon
2 stars (Good Try) Danny Huston is the best vampire I've seen and the teeth are impressive. However, this genre has been thrashed to death and vampires have become predictable and offer no real suspense after the first course. ~Tubbs
