Twice Upon a Time
Aroview: Agreeable Pan-Euro comedy recounting what happens when a former showbiz couple – a director and his actress muse – reunite thirty years after their very public separation.
Delicately poised between the gracefully aged Rampling (still able to pull off a tasteful nude scene), and the young-at-heart Rochefort (channelling Peter O'Toole), dir. De Caunes filters much of the comedy through the ex-lovers' seemingly dormant sexual chemistry, predictably reconciled by the film's end. Some light jabs at French cinema hit the spot, though this is more reliable as a teaming of two late-life actors, elderly romantics refreshing out-of-step with ageist Hollywood.
