USA 2007, 117 minutes
Dir. Sidney Lumet
Genres: Suspense/Crime / Heist
Feat. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, Marisa Tomei, Aleksa Palladino, Michael Shannon, Amy Ryan
Aroview: Intense tragi-thriller centred around a pair of hapless brothers (Hoffman and Hawke) who face devastating family consequences after a botched jewellery store robbery.
Not so much convoluted as overly fragmented, the time-shifting plot structure tends to lessen the intensity of what is at stake, particularly in the concluding half. However, crime fans will find plenty to get their teeth into, with old pro dir. Sidney Lumet sustaining a palpaple sense of dread throughout, while drawing out the respective and considerable strengths of his excellent cast.
Average rating (Very Good). Showing 1-5 of 5 member reviews.
5 stars (Exceptional) Bold, vivid and brilliant. A ferocious thriller that drags you in, with an exceptional performance from Hoffman. ~Wizzums
4 stars (Very Good) Exceptational acting and direction. The downward spiral of the unlikeable characters makes difficult viewing. ~Leighton
2 stars (Good Try) Suffers from the over dramatics which is a pity considering the Director and cast. ~Tubbs
4 stars (Very Good) A compelling watch, where things just go from bad to worse for all the main characters and you know it won't end well. Definitely recommended. ~Warbuff
4 stars (Very Good) Not a cheery flick, but a gripping one. If it tends toward melodrama as it goes on, it does so with a maturity and emotional impact uncommon in similar (modern) pulp-noir thrillers. The headline cast are all in top-form. ~fairbrother
