UK 2008, 108 minutes
Dir. Martin McDonagh
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Suspense/Crime / Black Comedy, Gangsters
Aroview: A smart, jet-black comedy centred on two Irish assassins who are packed off to Bruges, Belgium by their superior after a hit goes horribly pear-shaped.
A confident and unique spin on the staple hitman genre, this was virtually tailormade to fit the talents of veteran Gleeson (never better), and Colin Farrell's "lovable rogue", though both have their thunder stolen by the historic town of Bruges itself, a best-kept-secret tourist destination if ever there was one. Also putting Ireland back on the (film-making) map, playwright McDonagh does a terrific job as a first-time helmer, even if he can't quite get it to pop and fizz like SEXY BEAST, which is clearly an influence.

4 stars (Very Good) A violent and dark comedy with Farrell in lead as one of three 'honourable' assassins caught up in a feud in sleepy Bruges. Now how could you not like Bruges; it's a fairytale town. ~Tom H
5 stars (Exceptional) ~normfilmbuff
1 star (Turkey) leaden, common-denominator stuff with loads of íronic' swearing - taking the piss, surely? Offensive Oirishness. ~Anon
5 stars (Exceptional) A sharp, savage comedy with acidic wit and a dark heart. It's bold, brutal and brilliant. ~Wizzums
4 stars (Very Good) ~atsophie
4 stars (Very Good) It works - the hardest genre to work in - black comedy. ~Tubbs
