Painters Painting
Synopsis: A candid history of the New York Art Scene, 1940-1970.
Aroview: Both a beginner's and connoisseur's guide to "Abstract Expressionism", this excellent 70's documentary provides satiating first hand insights from many of the key exponents of this distinctively American art movement.
Of particular note is the rare archival footage of seminal artists at work - Poons, Pollock etc - and of course the Andy Warhol segments, where the enigmatic artist seems to be taking it all with a grain of salt. Others among the featured painters are Robert Rauschenberg, William de Kooning, Jasper Johns, Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, Barnett Newman, Hans Hoffman, Jules Olitski, Philip Pavia, Robert Motherwell, and Kenneth Noland.
