Given a cracking script (by THE WEST WING’s Aaron Sorkin) and opening scene to launch from, dir. Fincher, with the invisible sleekness and technical polish we’ve come to expect, dives head first into the scarcely believable tale of a college nerd who single-handedly created the social media juggernaut, only to be accused of stealing the idea. What unfolds is both dynamic human drama, full of confrontational dialogue and witty put-downs, and of-the-moment reflection, in which cutthroat business dealings, corporate skulduggery, and the all-mighty dollar are among the pertinent themes explored. Less contemporary CITIZEN KANE than a 21st century WALL STREET or NETWORK, this is a crisp snapshot of our times that ought to be seen sooner, rather than later.

5 stars (Exceptional) My favourite film of 2010, every minute of the social network is packed full of fun, drama, wit, intrigue, or 21st century pop-culture. If you're alive this decade, this is a film you can't afford to miss. ~Tom H

3 stars (Good Enough) For what does it profit a man to gain the whole (virtual) world, and forfeit his soul? Once the buzz dies down this strident, simplistic film will have the shelf life of 'Rogue Trader'. So by all means see it sooner, rather than later. ~HiFi
