After the Waterfall
Aroview: The debut feature of dir. Simone Horrocks is an intimate portrait of a man's grief as he struggles to put his life back together after the disappearance of his daughter.
Less interested in solving the crime than exploring emotional repercussions of tragedy, though as such the director doesn't quite find the delicate balance between low-key, organic incident and melodrama, something which could be related to the source material, a British novel here transposed to an Auckland setting. Where it does sustain, however, is in the central performance of Anthony Starr, marking him as an actor of sufficient charisma and instinct to easily transcend his twin roles on local hit series 'Outrageous Fortune'.
