American Film Theatre - Galileo
Aroview: A generally satisfactory version of Bertolt Brecht's stageplay concerning the ethical dilemmas of the scientist Galileo, who among other things proved that the Earth rotated around the Sun and discovered the moons of Jupiter.
Dir. Losey had already created a famous stage version of the play in 1947, and with the help of the American Film Theatre was able to complete his cinematic designs decades later. Still, this suffers a little from the casting of lightweight Chaim Topol in the lead (though the rest of the cast are excellent), blunting Brecht's allegory of the scientist giving in to political expedience.
