Dir. Nicolas Winding Refn

Genres: Suspense/Crime
Topics: Petrolheads.
Feat. Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks, Oscar Isaac, Christina Hendricks, Ron Perlman
“It's a film that has its finger on the pulse of what's current and in style, and one that has solidified its place as the coolest film of the year.”~Stephen Lambrechts, IGN Movies
Aroview: Ryan Gosling smoulders as a moonlighting getaway driver in-over-his-head in this crisply stylised, romance-inflected crime thriller – something of an ode to decades-old genre cinema, but shot through with an ultra-modern, ultra-cool sensibility.
While the high-performance components of Nicolas Winding Refn’s film make for irresistible viewing – an impeccable cast of actors (Albert Brooks as a Jewish crime lord the standout), a memorable electronic soundtrack (by Cliff Martinez), and a dusky, neon-tinted perspective of L.A. – this remains a low-rev mood piece at best with an artificial investment in the look and feel of things. (Though it must be said that the unorthodox first half is fantastically offbeat.) Those easily seduced by the muscle-car auto-erotica, bursts of graphic violence, and Gosling’s studly good looks are in for a ride, though for our money, you’re better off returning to the source (Walter Hill’s DRIVER, et al.).

5 stars (Exceptional) An excellent example of "style over substance" done right. The characters, the suspense, the intense moments of action, the music - it's all spot on. ~Tom H

5 stars (Exceptional) It seems to be a fairytale crossed with a nightmare; the simple sweetness of the central relationship mingled with the chilling horror of a bloody curb-stomp, and it is ultra-stylish, ultra-cool and utterly mesmerising. ~Wizzums
4 stars (Very Good) Quintessentially Southern Californian homage to Raymond Chandler and Quentin Tarantino. Carefully crafted movie ticks all of the boxes. Ryan Gosling plays with a frightening and icy intensity as things spiral down into ugliness on that very last job. ~Anon
4 stars (Very Good) Grips immediately, beautiful-looking, idiosyncratic use of music. However, the characters are all ciphers and the lone, laconic Samurai thing's been done to death, no? Kind of cinematic Nouvelle Cuisine. ~HiFi
4 stars (Very Good) Could be mistaken for just another violent mobster flick, with high-speed car action, but there's a subtle and gentle love story at it's core - with standout acting - that sets it apart from the usual. The perfect date movie, perhaps? ~GenXGirl
3 stars (Good Enough) Great opening segment.Excellent casting with Albert Brooks a revelation. Some unnecessary slow motion camera work. ~Tubbs
4 stars (Very Good) ~mvvm
5 stars (Exceptional) The Gos' as a broody hero in over his head. Brilliant soundtrack drags us into an 80's electronica wilderness in LA. Makes an abrupt right turn into a violent revenge flick, showcasing Winding -Refn's forte. Must see. ~bikewrench
3 stars (Good Enough) Refn's emphatic stylization channels Michael Mann, Walter Hill, and Brian De Palma: if Tarantino told stories with pictures instead of dialogue, they might be like this. The result's a formal wet-dream, but so doggedly "cool" it starts to ring hollow. ~fairbrother
