Most Fun You Can Have Dying, The
Aroview: Sultry youth drama from first-time feature dir. Kirstin Marcon about a terminally ill young man who absconds overseas with the money raised for his treatment to find a companion and 'fellow traveller' in an enigmatic French woman.
Two thirds of the film were shot on a 14-day whirlwind tour across 11 European locations, and it is visually captivating, with Grayson Gilmour's soundtrack also beautifully composed. Leaning heavily on these impressionistic elements to compensate a simplistic script, the source novel was apparently (tellingly?) written in 24 hours, but a swarthy Matt Whelan excels in the demanding lead role, almost unrecognisable from his sweet turn in MY WEDDING AND OTHER SECRETS.
