Oz the Great and Powerful
“A visually dazzling, wickedly humoured and richly characterised epic that has Sam Raimi's magic touch all over it.”~FILMINK
Aroview: Sam Raimi directs this spectacular re-imagining of the Wizard of Oz legend for Disney studios - an origin story centred on the coming of Oz as the chosen ruler of the Emerald City.
Taking full advantage of current technical wizardry, this gleams as bright as Dorothy's red shoes in the unsurpassable original, with exceptional lustre given to the likes of a porcelain doll, etc., and this nicely integrates the idea of late-1800's industrial magic and charlatanism into Frank L. Baum's fantasy world. The witchy women are a bit well-worn and hokey, but it's at least a vast improvement on Tim Burton's bloated ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
