Artemisia
Aroview: Study of the first significant female painter, Artemisia Gentileschi, the daughter of Caravaggio's one-time assistant in 17th Century Italy.
Banished for portraying nudes, then adopted by a prestigious mentor, she is soon embroiled in an ambiguous sex scandal that rather distracts from her creative will, let alone, some would argue, the facts. Though presented more as a fated gothic heroine than impassioned feminist maverick, drama has a visual flair that employs the lighting designs of the High Renaissance.
