Requiem for a Dream
Aroview: The indignities of drug addiction are given the full-blown treatment by the director of PI, who deploys a catalogue of cutting-edge techniques to vividly chronicle the downward spirals of four junkies.
Adapting the novel by Herbert Selby Jnr. (LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN) as a visceral horror vision, the extreme and audacious subjective style presents a challenge even for the non-squeamish. Best story involves Ellen Burstyn, who gives an incredible (Oscar-nominated) performance as an elderly widow addicted to diet pills and infomercials. For better and for worse this is both hard to watch and hard to look away. Also with Jared Leto, Marlon Wayans, and music by Clint Mansell.
