Believer, The
Aroview: The darker side of Jewish identity is examined in this risky, provocative drama about a disillusioned young man who tries to reconcile his repressed Jewish heritage with his dedication as a neo-Nazi activist.
The film, too, has divided loyalty – this is a drama that dares to challenge sacrosanct Jewish doctrine while maintaining a sympathetic edge, and though well researched and complex, is still likely to prove controversial (or at least a bitter pill) in Jewish quarters. If the scenario is more ‘dramatic’ than entirely plausible (though inspired by a true incident), the key casting of newcomer Ryan Gosling – in a visceral lead performance – makes one a firm believer.
