A low-key two-hander that attracted serious Oscar attention and went on to become the ‘independent’ hit of the year, this confirms Ms. Coppola, along with her debut THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, as perhaps the leading female voice of her generation.

4 stars (Very Good) Bob, an aging movie star, and Charlotte a bored wife of a workaholic, are two Americans staying in a posh Tokyo hotel who form a touching friendship. Each is lonely, in their own way, and become an odd and unlikely pair of soul-mates. Emotionally subtle. ~GenXGirl

3 stars (Good Enough) Even though located in an exciting city the screenplay gets across the feelings of loneliness and boredom that can be experienced when away from home. To its credit, it also accomplishes this in a low key manner. ~Tubbs
