American Film Theatre - Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris

USA 1975, 98 minutes
Dir. Denis Héroux
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Classics, Music / Performing Arts

Aroview: With no plot or dialogue, this is surely the least theatrical of the American Film Theatre productions of the 1970s, instead comprising a revue of songs by cult Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel.

Over 27 numbers, all enacted in quasi-musical costumery and performance, Brel's songs cover a wide range of themes, all linked by his unique troubadour perspective and wittily bitter lyrics. Well worth a viewing for the curious, and for Brel fans, indispensable. Songs include ‘Ne Me Quitte Pas’, ‘Bachelor’s Dance’, ‘Amsterdam’, ‘Timid Frieda’, ‘Statue’, ‘Next’, ‘Alone’, ‘The Bulls’, ‘I Loved’, ‘Carousel’, ‘My Childhood’, ‘Old Folks’, ‘Jacky’, ‘Taxi Cab’, ‘Funeral Tango’, ‘Marathon’, ‘Last Supper’, ‘The Desperate Ones’ and ‘If We Only Have Love’.
