The suave Fernando Rey anchors this uneven screenplay – it has an unnecessary slapping scene and there is some repetitive interaction between the three leads –, but it does contain some expected Bunuel touches.
For a film made in the 1940s, the special effects were well produced. Of equal excellence was the writing & the casting of Livesey & Massey for the crucial trial scene was spot on. 75 years on & this excellent piece of filmmaking is still to be admired.
