Vanilla Sky (2001)
There is good sci–fi in there somewhere but the emphasis of the screenplay is more on Cruise which because he is one of the producers I suppose is understandable. More quality, rather than commercial appeal, in some casting decisions, would have helped.
5x2 (Five Times Two) (2004)
The usual middle age fluff with the usual insatiable characters.
Lou Reed's Berlin (2007)
Not great Lou Reed but it is still Lou Reed.
To Be or Not to Be (1942)
The plot idea is original and the screenplay is very well written with some witty one liners. However, for the comedy to work, it needs timing and for this, the casting is spot on.
Harpoon (2019)
Although these three characters deserve each other and to be stranded together they didn't need to take a camera with them.
Akeelah and the Bee (2006)
Keke Palmer as the young speller is very good and makes the padding scenes in between the spelling contests watchable. The contest scenes follow the usual formula but the ending is soft.
Birdy (1984)
The director doesn't seem to make two films alike (intentionally I think). The screenplay is intelligent, well written, and not predictable.
Hard To Be A God (2013)
I believe the work of the camera crew is extraordinary working in wet cramped conditions shifting the focus between several characters. A screenplay to lift your spirits. I think the late Ken Russell would have been proud of this one.
X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006)
A clear step down from the original of the series.
American Beauty (1999)
After a good start, the screenplay loses its momentum, and even with an attractive cast, it ceases to appeal.
