The cast is excellent in particular John Goodman who gives another memorable performance. The writing and characters are of Cohen standard and the set designs are commendable.
A mostly good natured and undemanding screenplay. As you would expect Jack Thompson to appear in an Aussie film likewise you can expect Ricardo Darín to appear in an Argentinian film.
The screenplay is forgettable but Frances and Amy are quality chalk and cheese. Throw in Shirley Henderson and Ciarán Hinds et al. plus excellent period details and your admission money is covered.
The screenplay has thankfully more drama than romance – the 1860s in Siam is depicted as being very unsettled. The production values are excellent and the casting of the two leads works well with strong support from Randall Duk Kim & Geoffrey Palmer.
A good performance from Charlotte Véry and the characters have slightly more substance than a number of the Director's other romantic offerings. Overlong if you are not a romantic though.
