Hulk (2003)
It doesn't offer much that is different to the many other comic book heroes – except its green – and it owes a debt to King Kong.
Blind Side, The (2009)
Its a crappy story but that makes it all the more remarkable that for the most part it doesn't get soppy but remains watchable. Its Sandra's film but Kathy Bates breezes in in a support role and she would have been interesting in the lead role.
Basil The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
Pretty basic story telling but it does the job. The animation is adequate.
Being John Malkovich (1999)
Screenplay has a bit of Lewis Carroll about it – Floor 7.5 a great idea as is entering someone's head but that's the peak & its too early – after that the fantasy becomes less interesting. Cusack & Keener do well & Diaz has a part that requires acting.
Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)
The characters are delightful and colour coded so its a bit easier for adults to follow the story.
Fame (1980)
The first half hour is loose and strong and is the best part of the film – it includes a terrific ad lib dance in the classroom. After that the film seems to tighten up as an apology for what went before and becomes normal unfortunately.
United (2011)
The wardrobe and set designs are fine but a documentary would have been closer to the truth and without the sentimentality and drama.
Girl in the Book, The (2015)
I'm guessing it had some good intentions about portraying sexual harassment with Michael Nyqvist playing the predator well but the whole thing is a bit shallow.
Fearless (1994)
The plot idea is fine but the screenplay drags in the middle –however the excellent casting helps keep up some interest.
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
An odd film that has good reviews elsewhere for its screenplay and performances – it didn't work for me first time round but John Goodman is no slouch when selecting his parts.
