While We're Young (2014)
Very surprised that this was selected for the NZFF – its very light material and hardly worth the film stock – Naomi is fine as usual but Stiller struggles.
Fox and the Hound (1981)
Wonderful characters and an enjoyable tale ensure this is successful.
Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World (2003)
A real attempt has been made to get the props and the way of life on board right – a commendable effort. The action sequences are well done but unusually do not dominate the film. Excellent musical score particularly over the end credits.
First Knight (1995)
The strong points are the set designs, costumes and performances from Julia and Connery (who seems to be coasting). The casting of Gere however is strange – he looks out of place – maybe because he is working with a different type of actor/acting method.
Blackboard Jungle, The (1955)
Still has some interesting segments 60 years on.
Battleground (1949)
Emphasises the buddy bits – chatting and joking near the front line etc. but the realism wears thin when you consider they were meant to be opposing some of the best of Germany's remaining troops.
Fast and Furious 7 (Furious 7) (2015)
Although it takes ages over the closing scenes and uses slow motion to emphasise the action at times and fills in the space between the action with padding – it does very well to stretch it out to 137 mins.
Still Alice (2014)
It needed someone of the quality of Julianne to make this plot watchable – these films are normally over dramatic, tearful and crappy.
Recess: School's Out (2001)
Reasonable story and adequate animation.
Peter Pan 2 - Return to Neverland (2002)
Excellent characters and easy on the eye animation.
