Nick And Nora's Infinite Playlist (2008)
Doesn't push against any boundaries – okay but you feel as if you haven't achieved anything by watching it.
King Kong (2005)
Extended version: Didn't penalise it for being a remake as it was made as a homage to the original. Naomi deserves a star all to herself. The effects are top drawer but it takes twice as long as the original to tell the story so shoots itself in the foot
Petrified Forest, The (1935)
Bette and Howard are in fine form and play off each other very well. Its a good script and not too long which helps you cope with the lack of movement in the surroundings and characters.
Maid in Manhattan (2002)
When you have Fiennes, Richardson and Tucci the end product should be better, but I suppose even this kind of talent needs the material to succeed. On top of that there is a top drawer actor in Bob Hoskins with hardly anything to do. Didn't need the kid.
Dan in Real Life (2007)
There must be something in it (which I missed) to attract the classy Juliette Binoche but she looks a bit out of place among this lot.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Tries hard to show the behind the scenes of TV news broadcasting – as most of us are not privy to what goes on it is well worth a watch.
Echoes (TV Mini-series) (1988)
The first part – ie. pre scholarship – is much better than what follows. Glorious locations and the wonderful brogue help. Geraldine James the acting highlight.
Great Gatsby, The (1949)
There is a lot of talking and the overall impression is one of flatness.
Pleasantville (1998)
The very good plot idea shows up well in the first half of the film but then the story telling gets stodgy and a bit preachy which is a shame – a talented cast in Macy,Allen,Daniels,Walsh and Don Knotts. The set designs are very good.
Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956)
Loved the early working class street scenes – most of them were shot in the rain. Newman couldn't have been the obvious choice to play a boxer but he is fine– good performance from his mum Eileen Heckart. The bouts are hectic generally.
