Day of Wrath (1943)
Beautiful film that feels fresh and modern (story–wise & aesthetically) despite its age. It's one that has lasted. Terrific performances that have a naturalism to them that is unexpected from this era.
Breaking the Waves (1996)
Still think this is Von Trier's best. Confounds expectations & takes the viewer into the grey area where there are no rules & conventions (as he did later with The Idiots) & where the story can go in any direction. Beautiful heart–breaking performances.
Brothers (2004)
Yes, exceptional film. Complex, layered, confounds your expectations of the various characters.
Hunt, The (2012)
Brilliant and tragic film that calls to mind the madness around the Peter Ellis case in NZ. Beautiful performance by Mads Mikkelson.
A Hijacking (2012)
Terrific film that shows yet again the versatility of these Danish actors. A real character driven piece which works on a truly psychological level (unlike Captain Phillips with which it is often compared). - DVD $19.95
Happy, Happy (2010)
Compact and tight ensemble piece that is touching, funny and beautifully performed, with unexpected delights and surprises along the way. It\'s the sort of modest filmmaking that we could and should be doing in NZ.
Salt of the Earth (1954)
Terrific film on the role of working women in the class struggle. It poses that childcare, housework, sanitation etc. are not just \'women\'s issues\' but are part of the larger class struggle.
