Aroview: Scorsese's adaptation of the novel by Edith Wharton is a extravagant period costumer that makes Merchant-Ivory look downright paltry. Stellar cast are intriguing to watch though the emotionally arid material is perhaps too subtle to sustain the director's flamboyant style.
