And the Pursuit of Happiness

USA 1986, 78 minutes
Dir. Louis Malle
Genres: Documentary

Topics: Indigenous & Minority Cultures.

Aroview: A satisfying rumination on the nature of the 'American Dream', as it relates to the constrasting experiences of immigrants to the United States, from French dir. Louis Malle, who was himself a recent arrival in the 'Land of the Free' when he made this film.

Among the many scenarios Malle uncovers are the illegal border-crossing from Mexico, successful Asian businesses, and political exiles from Central America; but he also addresses the concerns of local communities who feel threatened by mass migration and the consequent added competition for jobs. The literary-minded will also be pleased with the several interviews with Nobel-prize winning poet Derek Walcott.
