Don't Come Knocking
Aroview: Desultry tale of a washed-out actor who goes missing from a film production and, with the insurance company on his tail, ends up uncovering some interesting family secrets when he seeks out his estranged mother.
Written by and starring Sam Shepard in the lead role, this marks a reunion of sorts for the makers of PARIS, TEXAS, likewise rummaging through ye olde trunk of Americana cinema motifs - whisky-bottle ennui, lost children, dim-lit motel rooms - but constructing an odder, far less elegant storyline. While offering the evocative trappings of its sweeping landscapes and craggy lead star, dir. Wenders signally fails to cook up much in the dramatic department.
