Ballad of Jack and Rose, The

USA 2005, 107 minutes
Dir. Rebecca Miller
Genres: Drama

Topics: Rites-of-passage.

Aroview: Affecting coming-of-age melodrama from the dir. of PERSONAL VELOCITY about father Daniel Day-Lewis and daughter Camille Belle who live alone together in a former island commune. Their utopia, however, is challenged by land developers and the arrival of another woman.

Belle’s rebellion against outside influence Catherine Keener gives the film a scary, unpredictable tilt whilst Lewis slowly self-implodes by refusing to let go of his old communal lifestyle. The corruption of love is treated with utmost care as sixteen-year-old Belle blossoms into womanhood and the suggestion of incest is played off against their student-pupil relationship.
