Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Aroview: Johnny Depp is centre stage once again for dir. Tim Burton in this fiendish screen rendition of Stephen Sondheim's twisted musical about a revenge-obsessed barber's bloody killing spree.
Though the songs are a bit stodgy and Depp's singing range is limited, there's no better man for the job, and there's plenty to relish for those with a taste for jet black comedy, Victorian decadence, and musical kitsch. The odd genre mix provides a fresh outlet for Burton's unabating gothic obsession, though it's not for the faint of heart once Sweeney's gleaming cut-throat hits its stride. Bonham-Carter, Rickman and Baron Cohen are all first rate in support, as are the sumptuous visuals.

5 stars (Exceptional) The music contrasted with the morbid plot and gore is excellent. I thought all the actors were perfect for the roles, especially Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen. ~dr.strangelove
4 stars (Very Good) Some of the songs aren't great (Burton admits he doesn't like musicals), but the movie as a whole is dripping with Victorian atmosphere and gothic attitude which feels right at home with Burton, Depp, and Bonham-Carter. A great take on the old legend. ~Tom H
5 stars (Exceptional) A wonderfully dark, atmosphereic film that relishes in the gore and black humour. A real delight, with a fantastic cast. The songs aren't half bad either. ~Wizzums
