Aroview: Martin Scorsese’s latest is an intensely atmospheric, if overly confounding psychological thriller, set on a remote island which is home to shadowy mental asylum for the criminally insane.
Fronted by Scorsese’s frequent leading man of late, DiCaprio plays a U.S Marshall investigating the escape of a patient convicted of murdering her children – the least of his worries in a story that takes great liberties in testing the sanity of both its tormented main character and the viewer. Positively schizophrenic in its head-trip of garish hallucinations and paranoid delusions, there’s little concrete here to engage the mystery buff, though as a lavishly shot potboiler dressed in an imposing gothic sensibility, there’s plenty to admire formally with Scorsese’s craftsmanship as a filmmaker showing no signs of aging. Adapted from a novel by Dennis Lehane.

4 stars (Very Good) After watching it the film just gets better and better in my head. A rare experience looking back like that and aside from great viewing that's a valid reason why to watch. ~Baby

3 stars (Good Enough) Wilfully berserk in style (mashing pulp and gothic cliches with flambouyant indulgence), yet sadly pedestrian in content. Highly-polished and not without entertainment value, but too long and predictable to truly thrill. ~fairbrother
4 stars (Very Good) A brilliant pulp thriller, which perfectly evokes its period setting and keeps the viewer guessing to the very end. The casting is impeccable, starting with DiCaprio, through to great cameo roles from Patricia Clarkson and the great Max von Sydow. ~The Myrka
3 stars (Good Enough) david lynch has complicated story lines & even he doesn't understand the endings - his films you watch every frame entranced. this film fails to maintain interest - being shorter would have helped. ~Tubbs
3 stars (Good Enough) A well-crafted suspense/thriller with plenty of dark imagery and tense moments; however, I have to say I found the musical score a little overdone and the ending entirely predictable. ~Tom H
5 stars (Exceptional) A dark horse from Scorsese that turns into an intense, thought-provoking thriller with a stellar turn from DiCaprio. ~Wizzums
5 stars (Exceptional) Gets in your head - Positively schizophrenic ~Mattcant
