UK 1963, 110 minutes, B/W
Dir. Joseph Losey
Rating: [M]
Genres: Classics, Cult, Drama
Topics: Stageplay.
Feat. Dirk Bogarde, James Fox, Sarah Miles
Aroview: First collaboration between playwright Harold Pinter and dir. Losey is an elegant diagram of English class cruelties, with man-servant Dirk Bogarde subtly undermining the fragile snobbery of his employer James Fox. His moral 'corruption', helped along by lower-class trollop Sarah Miles, leads to an outstanding hallucinatory ending.

4 stars (Very Good) Dirk Bogarde's corrupting homme fatale is an almost unique creation. ~Anon
5 stars (Exceptional) Provocative work of genius from Losey, Pinter & Bogarde. It's about class & sex, with gay undertones (IMBd). Terrific cinematography recently enhanced for DVD by French TV. Screened 1 week in NZ when released; few ever saw this timeless movie. ~Sandy
5 stars (Exceptional) Bogarde!!! ~Regando
4 stars (Very Good) That sounds like New Zealand! I had the luck to catch it in London in the seventies. Loved the way a dripping tap and a phone left ringing can build the tension. Bring back black and white I say.... ~Bolero
4 stars (Very Good) A good example of a top screenwriter's work put in the hands of the right director and then performed by a spot on cast - in this case, Bogarde, Fox, Craig, and Miles. ~Tubbs
3 stars (Good Enough) ~Anonz
