Stevie
Aroview: A provocative, uniquely intimate doco in which the director reknews his acquaintance with a troubled adoptee, now facing prison, whom he once mentored as a college student.
Returning to his hometown in rural Illinois, Steve James finds the boy "Stevie" grown into an aggressive, sociopathic young man, divorced after a five-month marriage to a much-older wife, and in chronic trouble with the law. Like James's HOOP DREAMS this is a little protracted at nearly two and a half hours, but uncomfortably fascinating as the project itself begins to impact on the sensitivity of the filmmaker and on the expectations and fate of his less fortunate namesake.
