USA 2003, 99 minutes
Dir. Marcus Nispel
Rating: [R18]
Genres: Horror / Splatter
Feat. Jessica Biel
Aroview: Despite being largely unnecessary, and certainly no improvement on the original, this remains a solid remake of Tobe Hooper's groundbreaking 1974 horror film.
Again, a van-load of teenagers become lost in backroads Texas and victims to a grotesque family of chainsaw and hook-wielding maniacs. Slickly shot, this concentrates more on the mechanics of gore and torture, than the ghastly black humour of the original, adding a back-story 'explaining' the source of Leatherface's tendencies through a childhood flashback.

2 stars (Good Try) A bit more effective than successive Hollywood horror-remakes, but still essentially redundant: flashy rather than stylish, unpleasant rather than unnerving. A spectacular wet T-shirt scene for Biel fans... anyone else should hire the original instead. ~fairbrother
2 stars (Good Try) Not too bad remake at all, with some decent fright moments - but the chilling line left ringing in my ears at the end sums up these remakes: "you're going the wrong way..." ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) It has a hard act to follow and may try a bit too hard to shock. Having R. Lee Ermey on board helps however. ~Tubbs
4 stars (Very Good) not's bad, it's not as good as the original though, ~Wyatt Earp
