Avalon (2001): Plays like a long and expensive perfume commercial. It looks sumptuous but impossible to smell.

Trouble in Paradise (1932): Really exceptional writing and delivery. The movies had just learnt to talk and already this film reaches the pinnacle of sophisticated comedy. Stylish even in the most stylish of decades.
Lady Eve, The (1941): Great cast. Even makes falling on your arse look clever.
Night of the Hunter, The (1955): A gothic fairytale with Mitchum at his most mythical. After it was initially received poorly on release, Laughton was so crushed he never directed again. He didn't count on its lingering appeal. Stays with you for years.; DVD ~~$24.95~~ $18.70
