High Tension
Aroview: A grisly yet indeed tense French horror movie directed with stunning virtuosity, about two women whose rural weekend getaway turns horrific when they are preyed upon by a relentless psychopath.
Influenced by "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in particular - with its backwoods setting and no help at hand - this was similarly conceived as an uncompromising horror movie with an aim to deliver the scariest experience possible. Though it succeeds spectacularly to this end, it ultimately impales its own narrative and stops short of being the modern genre classic it might have been.

3 stars (Good Enough) Full-throttle shocker with (just) enough manipulative panache to justify its unapologetic brutality. White-knuckle thrills are guaranteed but, frustratingly, it sells itself short with a groan-worthy last-minute 'surprise'. ~fairbrother
