Aroview: A groundbreaking drama set in a South African village, which depicts a woman's (Khumalo) struggles with health, family and local superstition when she is diagnosed HIV-positive.
Determinedly plain-faced, if sometimes a little glib, dir. Roodt confronts one of the tragedies of modern Africa (AIDS) with humane directness, drawing some superb portraits of grace under pressure from his cast and eloquently declaring some of the shocking deficiences of healthcare from many African people. Among the film's other innovations, it is the first internationally-released feature in the Zulu language.
